Abstract:
Understanding the meaning of "spirit" in the holy texts has a special complexity. One of its complexities is the function and purpose of its creation, as God’s creature. The Bible and the Holy Qur'an have both mentioned the soul, in the two contexts of ‘the creation of human’ and ‘the descent of revelation and resurrection’. The Abrahamic religions, mainly in the second context, have emphasized on the Prophet’s relation with the soul, as an aid in his prophecy, which can be better interpreted in the intertextual connection between the Holy Quran and the previous Holy texts. Comparing the Holy Quran with the Holy Bible, there are some similarities and differences in their connection with the two variables of spirit and prophecy; and beside some common aspects, their differences are important as well. Their intertextual comparison shows the different positions of the Holy Quran on this issue. These positions can be explained in three parts: the relationship between the Holy Qur'an and the Bible in this regard is sometimes a negative-omissive relationship, sometimes a positive relationship, and sometimes a reforming-changing relationship. The present essay analyzes the different dimensions and aspects of these three relationships.
