Abstract:
'What is human nature' when is studied in the context of practical philosophy, it undoubtedly carries soteriological values. However, contrary to the commentators who were heralds of goodness of human nature, Xunzi, from the ancestors of Chinese philosophy, and Thomas Hobbes, among the modern Western philosophers, spoke openly about the evilness of human nature with exemplary courage. An in-depth look at the intellectual structure of these two philosophers shows that despite their agreement in the conclusion, they have a difference of opinion on certain matters, which has been somewhat neglected in terms of research. The findings show that human nature has different semantic uses for these two philosophers. According to Hobbes, nature is equivalent to essence and includes everything that the material nature has placed in the human entity, while according to Xunzi, the meaning of nature, regardless of its similarity or dissimilarity with the abstract essence, is the heavenly moral and causal essence, which, despite referring to something else, has a definite identity and has a will.
