    The Indo-European Origin of the Stoic Doctrine of Ekpyrosis

    Abstract: 
    Mythology of the end of the world is generally associated with the description of apocalyptic disasters in many ancient religions. Among these apocalyptic disasters, the theme of "ekpyrosis [conflagration] in Stoic apocalyptic texts" is a special one, since this myth of the end of existence has a central role. Due to the existence of similar narratives of this theme in Indo-Iranian apocalyptic texts, many researchers emphasize on its Indo-Iranian origins. The ancient mythological evidence of this theme in ancient Greece, as well as the existence of similar examples in other Indo-European peoples, are some other evidences for the possibility of its Indo-European origin. Therefore, the research problem is to investigate the origin of "ekyprosis" in the Greek Stoic philosophical texts. Using library sources and a descriptive-analytical method, this research investigates the philosophical, religious and mythological documents of ancient Greece and other Indo-European peoples and reached the conclusion that the origin of this theme is the apocalyptic beliefs of the early Indo-European peoples; they believed existence is destroyed through endless cycles, by disasters such as fire and flood, and a new existence is reborn again.

    Abstract: 
    اساطیر سرانجام جهان در بسیاری از ادیان باستانی، عموماً با توصیف بلایای آخرزمانی همراه است. از میان این فجایع آخرزمانی، بن‌مایة «آتش‌سوزی سرانجام در متون فرجام شناسانه رواقی» به‌واسطة محوری بودن نقش این اسطوره پایان هستی، جایگاهی ویژه دارد. بسیاری از پژوهشگران بر اساس وجود روایت‌های همسان از این بن‌مایه در متون آخرت‌شناسانة هندوایرانی، بر خاستگاه‌های هندوایرانی آن تأکید داشتند. البته شواهد اسطوره‌شناسی کهن این بن‌مایه در یونان باستان و نیز وجود نمونه‌های همسان در دیگر اقوام هندواروپایی نیز امکانی بر خاستگاه‌های هندواروپایی آن بن مایه بود. مسئلة این پژوهش بر این مبنا، بررسی خاستگاه‌ بن‌مایة «آتش‌سوزی سرانجام» در متون فلسفة رواقی یونان است. این پژوهش بر اساس منابع کتابخانه‌ای و شیوة توصیفی ـ تحلیلی به بررسی مستندات فلسفی، دینی و اسطوره‌ای یونان باستان و دیگر اقوام هندواروپایی پرداخته و به این نتیجه دست یافته است که خاستگاه این بن‌مایه، باورهای فرجام‌شناسانة اقوام اولیة هندواروپایی بوده است که در آن، هستی طی ادواری نامتناهی با فجایعی چون آتش‌سوزی و سیل از میان می‌رود و بار دیگر هستی نو باززایی می‌شود.
