The Qur'anic word "Sakina" is used only six times in three chapters of the Qur'an. According to Muslim commentators and translators of the Quran, the word "Sakina" is often translated as "calmness and tranquility" and is formed from the root "Sakan". Arab lexicographers have sometimes stated the same meaning for this term, and some other times, they have chosen other equivalents based on related narrations. However, there are a few translators who have suggested different meanings. Therefore, the existence of differing views and lack of a criterion for preferring one equivalent to the others, has made it difficult to gain a correct understand of this Qur’anic term. Using a historical-comparative method, the present paper conducts a careful study on this term in related sources, its true meaning and equivalent.  The study shows that the word "Sakina" has a common origin and meaning with its uses in sacred Jewish texts. Although we cannot definitely consider this term as being borrowed from Syriac or Hebrew languages, abundant semantic and applied similarities of these two words in the Qur'an, and Jewish narrations and sacred texts indicate its specific religious meaning. Therefore, "Sakina" is the "divine glorious presence and manifestation" which believers experience in certain circumstances.

abstract_fa ={واژه قرآنی «سکینه» تنها شش بار در سه سوره‌ی قرآن به کار رفته است. مفسران مسلمان و مترجمان قرآن، این واژه را غالباً به معنای «آرامش و طمأنینه»، مطابق با ریشه‌ی لغوی آن «سکن» دانسته اند. لغویان عرب نیز همین معنا را برای واژه بیان کرده اند. گاه با استناد به روایات، برابرنهاده هایی دیگری نیز به کار برده اند. در این میان، شمار اندکی از محققان از معنای معهود فراتر رفته و معادل های دیگری برگزیده اند. با این حال، آرای مختلف و عدم وجود شاهدی بر گزینش یکی بر دیگری، فهم مفهوم صحیح این واژه قرآنی را دشوار ساخته است. این مقاله، با روش تاریخی ـ تطبیقی، به بررسی دقیق این واژه در منابع مرتبط، مفهوم صحیح و برابر نهاده‌ی مناسب آن می پردازد. بررسی های صورت گرفته نشان می دهد که واژه «سکینه»، خاستگاه و سیاقی مشترک با کاربردهای آن در متون مقدس یهودی دارد. هرچند نمی توان این واژه را به قطع، وام واژه ای سریانی یا عبری دانست، اما اشتراکات فراوان معنایی و کاربردی این دو واژه در قرآن، روایات و متون مقدس یهودی، بیانگر بار معنایی خاصِّ دینی آن است. براین اساس، «سکینه» عبارت است از «حضور و تجلی شکوهمند الهی» که در شرایطی خاص شامل حال مؤمنان می گردد.},
